art space in the catastrophe

In June 2023 at the Kunstverein Langenhagen. A prelude in three parts.

The environments surrounding us have unmistakably fallen into crisis-ridden, if not catastrophic, conditions. More precisely, they have been brought into crisis and catastrophic conditions by human activity. What role did and do art spaces play in this? And how do they function in these conditions, as places of confrontation and cultural production? With these questions, we are not interested in pragmatic solutions by means of which we can deal more effectively (more disciplined, more optimized, more meager) with the conditions that are very likely to become even more difficult, so that we can endure them a little longer, survive in them a little longer. Rather, we would like to deal with fundamental reorientations, other goals, other modes, perhaps even ways out.

On three Saturdays in June, we will try to approach these topics in the Kuntsverein by means of lectures, discussions, performances and films. The topics will include working and production conditions in the art field, administrative constraints and requirements, mutual care and attention, other forms of learning and producing, sustainability, our relationship to our environment and the planet, waste, possible futures, and much more.

Among others with Meike Behm, bonk4∞, Annette Hans, b_books, Bettina Knaup, Nada Rosa Schroer, Floating University Berlin, Luce deLire, Lucie Kolb, Annette Krauss, cittipunkt.

Kunstraum in Catastrophe in June 2023 is kindly sponsored by the Lower Saxony Ministry of Science and Culture and the Karin and Uwe Hollweg Foundation.

Free space for thoughts and buildings #6

This summer, for the sixth time, the Freiraum für Gedanken und Bauwerke, the building time of the Kunstverein Langenhagen, takes place. From July 10 to 28, all those who feel like it can build, sew, ferment and more together with various artists in the garden of the Kunstverein.

On the meadow in the garden, between crooked trees, small hills and weird sculptures, we want to prepare a big summer fest for three weeks. What do we need for the fest? A stage? A big table? A feast? Festive clothes and jewelry? And what do we want to celebrate? The warmth of the sun? The shade of the trees? Our strange ideas, or the things we've built, sewn and concocted?

Freiraum für Gedanken und Bauwerke and Das Fest are a collaboration of young artists from the Hannover region, with people from Langenhagen and the surrounding area.

Together you can participate in the preparations for Das Fest for three weeks. Each week has a main focus:

  • July 10-14 from 12 to 5 pm: In the first week, furniture will be disassembled, built and invented. Tables, chairs, stage sets and more can be created in the process. With Orpheo Winter and Charlotte Maria Kätzl.

  • July 17-21 from noon to 5 p.m: During the second week, fabrics will be made into clothing, costumes, banners and tablecloths. With Agathe Borbe and Kira Wieckenberg.

  • July 23-28 from noon to 5 p.m.: Week three experiments with food and drink, scents and flavors, fermenting and brewing. With Lucila Pacheco Dehne and Jan Neukirchen.

On Saturday, July 29, the great festival will be held in the garden of the Art Association from 3 pm. During the festival, the things created in the open space can be used, admired and eaten. There will also be music by bands and DJs.

Participation is open for everyone and free of charge.

Materials are available on site, but can also be brought from your own basements, garages, closets and pantries.

Feel free to drop by or register in advance at: mail@kunstverein-langenhagen.de We look forward to seeing you!

Freiraum für Gedanken und Bauwerke is kindly sponsored by the VGH Foundation and the Lower Saxony Ministry of Science and Culture.

Kosmische Brocken - The Cinema of the mobile Kunstverein

The cinema series Kosmische Brocken (Cosmic Chunks) looks from different angles at the way the world is understood and made - and what it could become. The mobile Kunstverein shows documentary and fantastic films at Eichenpark in Langenhagen.

Cosmic chunks strike and shake the understanding of the world. How does it affect the dogs on the streets when one of them is abducted and shot into space? What might happen if virtual realities and biohacking become part of our everyday lives? How can we figure out a different way of dealing with each other, animals and our planet - and are we ready to follow through with it? The mobile Kunstverein doesn't have any answers, but invites you to cinema and conversation. That’s something for a start.
